FOLD

2023 Series

‘FOLD’

2023

Acrylic on 638gsm watercolour paper, archival standard. Various sizes. Hand painted.
Fold explores the dichotomy between flat and fullness. This collection is an ode to the simple, gentle pleasures that help fill your cup when it is empty. Maybe it's that really good book or walking on the sunnier side of the street or that perfect last mouthful or the first bite. Continuing with monolithic shapes and a controlled palette, Fold is an abstract representation of these small, yet somehow satisfying, moments of joy.

Jump

2021 Series

‘Jump’

2021

Hand painted originals, acrylic on various watercolour artboards & paper
Jump explores the sensation that hovers right between being grounded and floating. Like a weighty sigh of relief, this series is a whimsical homage to the small wins, cheap thrills, pleasant surprises, first steps, bold moves and scary things that seem silly after.

With suspended figures and dark cascading surfaces, Jump represents the emotional stretches that provide an anchored feeling of comfort rather than heaviness — cropping in on the briefer ups and downs in life that make you feel as human as ever.

My response to 2020:

This year has made me feel like a helpless but quietly hopeful bouncy ball — the ones you get from a gum ball machine. Small but uncontrollable. Bright but difficult to catch. I roll when I can, I try to find a soft cushion to stop but at any landing I am forced in a new trajectory. The harder the impact, the more momentum I gather and the higher I can bounce.

Along the way, I observe, mourn, celebrate, partake in the unbelievably unpredictable events that ebb and flow around me. Then back down I fall, slightly scared but riding the thrill of the unknown below.

Presenting itself in abstract and unsubtle forms,  2020 has shown me new experiences, new sickness, new bonds and new feelings. I’ve learnt that it is possible to find a whimsical perspective in a tough situation — to reshape what I see. Sometimes it’s hard but the result is worth it and I find myself fulfilled by the challenge of it all.
